On the floor

The casino has 20,000 sq ft of gaming space and over 150 video slot machines. Three table games share the floor: Blackjack, Let It Ride and Texas Hold'em. They run Tuesday to Saturday, 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM. On Sunday and Monday the tables stay closed. Texas Hold'em here is a table game, not a poker room, and no venue in this guide lists one.

Floor hours are 11:30 am to 1:00 am Monday to Thursday and 11:30 am to 2:00 am on Friday and Saturday. Sunday opens later, at 2:00 pm, and closes at 12:00 am. Times after midnight belong to the shift that started the day before, so Saturday's 2:00 am close falls on Sunday morning. Holiday hours should be checked on aseneskak.com.

Trapper's Club membership requires age 18 and valid ID. The Eagle's Nest Restaurant & Lounge is family friendly, and guests under 18 may dine there until 8 pm.

Across the river

Opaskwayak Cree Nation and The Pas face each other across the Saskatchewan River. The casino sits on Highway 10, north of The Pas and about 40 km from the Saskatchewan border. It is north of the 53rd parallel, in the part of the province Travel Manitoba calls Northern Manitoba. Road, air and rail all reach it.

A partnership of First Nations owns the casino. Its About page shows six logos: Chemawawin, Misipawistik, Mosakahiken, Opaskwayak, Sapotaweyak and Wuskwi Sipihk.

The nation also appears early in Manitoba's gaming history. In 1990 the first Native Gaming Commission Agreement gave Opaskwayak Cree Nation authority to license charitable gaming on reserve. The first First Nations VLT siteholder agreement followed in 1992, also with Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Aseneskak opened in 2002 as Manitoba's first First Nations casino, ahead of South Beach in 2005 and Sand Hills in 2014.

How far it is

Its official site is aseneskak.com. Staff are trained by the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, now Shared Health. The casino's Voluntary Exclusion Program is indefinite, and re-entry comes only through an application for Reinstatement of Access. The Gambling Helpline, 1-800-463-1554, answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
